March 2010
I've now submitted The Geometry of Distance to a few publishers and competitions, but no luck yet. I'll keep on trying!
I'm finding it difficult to make time for writing alongside motherhood and running my consultancy business... I seem to lack not just the actual time, but also the space in my head to create work. The Arts Council grant was wonderful in this respect because it allowed me dedicated time out. Maybe in a few years' time, that creative space in my head will have a bit more chance to flourish again, instead of floundering under laundry and playdoh!
June 2009
My Brazil sequence, The Geometry of Distance, is now finished and I am starting to submit it to competitions and publishers. I'm really pleased with the finished product and it was very helpful to have Aoife, my mentor for the sequence, looking over it... It motivated me to do a lot of reworking that would not otherwise have happened. Thanks, Aoife!
I'm hoping to get The Geometry of Distance published as a pamphlet/chapbook... Watch this space!
March 2009
Harborough District Council has awarded me a small Arts Development Grant to pay for some mentoring time, so I've approached Aoife Mannix and she's agreed to be my mentor... I'm really pleased to have the opportunity to work with Aoife as part of the process of creating my Brazil sequence, and grateful to Harborough District Council, whose arts budget has since been frozen...
November 2008
Celebrations afoot...
my application to Grants for the Arts was successful at third attempt, and Arts Council England, East Midlands has awarded me a grant of £3,000 for some writing time to develop a sequence of poems under the working title 'The Geometry of Distance'.
The poems focus around a trip to Brazil in 2006 for my brother's wedding (he lives in Sao Paulo), set in the context of my developing relationship with my partner, who I had to leave behind. The sequence explores how it feels to be a long way from loved ones, and the excitement, bewilderment and isolation of finding oneself in new territories, emotional and geographical.
I'm thrilled to be able to spend the next few months writing, and am currently trying to raise funding for a critical mentor to support me through the process of developing the sequence.
Well, back to my garret...!
